So off we went, the elevator ride a weirdly tense one. Of course it was. I was walking into what I had to assume was a paranormal sex club with a guy who’d stolen me from my parents and whom I barely knew. We hadn’t even gotten to the first date yet, let alone taking in a sex show. Which base was that anyway? When the doors slid open, I thought we both let out a sigh of relief.

I’d assumed we would be going next door to Eden, but Niall had shaken his head, taking my hand and leading me to a room at the very back of the lobby. He produced an old, gnarly-looking key, pushing it into the lock and turning. A bright light zipped along the sides of the door frame, and when he pushed it open, he seemed to have to do so with a considerable heft, like it weighed way more than it should. We emerged out into a now familiar lobby, a woman in the same uniform as Jerry last night standing there at the turnstile.

“Milord.” She had a raptor-like beauty, her bones, her eyes, her teeth all just a little too sharp. Her eyes were as green as grass, and her blonde hair had a greenish tinge to it as she bowed to Niall. She bowed deeper for me. “Your Majesty,” she said, “what is your pleasure tonight?”

Tonight? It’s early afternoon, I thought, but no matter.

“Is Flicker here?”

“Like them pretty, do you?” she asked, her tone as arch as her raised eyebrow, but she looked chastened when Niall growled at her. “He’s not performing currently, readying himself for his show later. But for you, milord, I can have him readied. He can be brought to a private room for the two of you?”

“There’s no need,” I replied. “I just want to have a quick chat with him. Can I go to his change room?”

“This is your domain, Your Majesty, none may say where you will or will not go.” She moved to unhook the velvet rope, but Niall’s hand shot out.

“This is Velecia, Meghan, one of our many employees who work the door, but her needs…are unorthodox,” Niall bit out. “Never, ever walk into one of these spaces unmarked. Not with us, not by yourself, none of it. It tells people what they can and can’t do. It’s probably your only defence from what lies beyond.”

I flinched when his gaze swivelled around to the other woman, feeling like they lasered marks on her flesh.

“If any reports of people walking into the VIP area unmarked get back to me, your desire for pain and degradation will be satisfied so deeply, you’ll not be able to lift a finger for weeks. It’ll be your pain, however, that you’ll need to ‘enjoy’.”

“Of course, milord,” a much more chastened Velicia said, her eyes dropping down to the ground.

Just like Mickey had, Niall searched through the tin of stamps and found the red bisected circle one again and pressed it to my flesh.
